Driving in Remote Desert Country

Before leaving on a trip in the desert, check:

  •  Battery.
  • Radiator and coolant quality and level.

Take:

  •  First Aid Kit.
  •  Flares.
  • – Extra radiator coolant.
  • Cooling hoses.
  • Spare fan belts.
  •  Fire extinguisher.
  •  Spare tire(s), tubes and repair kits.
  • Air pump and small hydraulic jack.
  •  Extra motor oil and check the manufacturers specifications as to SAE for hot weather.
  •  Extra air filters as you might want to change it every few hundred miles if it is dusty.
  • Poncho.
  •  Set of tools.
  •  Spot light for night repairs or signalling.

Special Equipment for desert travel

  •  Shovel and axe.
  • Whistle.
  • Wool blanket.
  • Sturdy carcover.
  • Winch with a heavy rope.
  • Wide tires.
  •  4 quarts of water per person per day.
  •  Two planks to help in releasing the car from soft sand.
