Planning a day trip
Plan an ltinerary
Make a detailed plan as to where you are going and where you plan to stay. Leave a copy with someone and tell them when you will report back to them. If you do not report back on time they will report you as lost to the authorities. When traveling do not leave the road or track because you wiII find that cacti and rocks all look the same if you are lost.
If you have any problems en route or change your plan inform your contact.
Food & Water
Bring at least two or three days of water. 4 quarts per person per day and use it sparingly.
Clothing
Wear the right clothing and be prepared for cold nights.
Accessories
Bring sunscreen (use at least SPF 30), hats, bandana, and sunglasses. For tent anchors use “Ziploc” bags filled with sand. Place them inside self standing tents to hold them down.
Car Supplies
Gasoline in a five gallon jerry can and make sure that the inside of the can is not rusted as the rust flakes might block your fuel system.
Extra radiator fluid, fan belt, radiator hose, distilled water for the battery. Shovel with at least a three foot handle. A hydraulic jack, pulley and rope to disengage the car. If you are driving off the road you will encounter sand and you will require high-axles, wide tires and preferably a four wheel drive car.
Walking
Walking on sand is difficult as you have the tendency to slide back. The energy required for one mile on sand is equivalent to two miles on regular terrain.
Wear boots and heavy socks as the sand is so hot that it can cause burns.
